Summary

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first part of J。R。R。 Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power – the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth。 All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring – the ring that rules them all – which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care。 Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose。

The text of this edition has been fully corrected and revised in collaboration with Christopher Tolkien and is accompanied by nineteen watercolour paintings from Alan Lee。

I wanted to love this so bad。 I just 。。。 I couldn’t。 I mean it almost took me two months to read because a) it’s so long and b) it dragged on。 It got to the point where I would skim parts of it (do I really need to know the exact detailed geographic layout of whatever land lies before them?!)。 Unexpectedly, I AM excited to watch the films and I think they will be fantastic。 But I’m giving up on reading this trilogy。 2。5 stars because it’s well written and the whole Moria scene had me hooked for I wanted to love this so bad。 I just 。。。 I couldn’t。 I mean it almost took me two months to read because a) it’s so long and b) it dragged on。 It got to the point where I would skim parts of it (do I really need to know the exact detailed geographic layout of whatever land lies before them?!)。 Unexpectedly, I AM excited to watch the films and I think they will be fantastic。 But I’m giving up on reading this trilogy。 2。5 stars because it’s well written and the whole Moria scene had me hooked for awhile。 (I do LOVE Sam Gamgee could be convinced to keep reading if he gets more page time) 。。。more

Let me give a little context to how I intend to review this and the following volumes in the LOTR。 I like many like to view LOTR as one book which has been divided into three volumes which are known as the trilogy today。 As I am reading from a trilogy box set。 I was wondering how I was going to review these。 At first, I thought I'd wait until I'd finished Return of the King before reviewing it。 But after reading Fellowship I feel that these three volumes have likely enough to distinguish themsel Let me give a little context to how I intend to review this and the following volumes in the LOTR。 I like many like to view LOTR as one book which has been divided into three volumes which are known as the trilogy today。 As I am reading from a trilogy box set。 I was wondering how I was going to review these。 At first, I thought I'd wait until I'd finished Return of the King before reviewing it。 But after reading Fellowship I feel that these three volumes have likely enough to distinguish themselves one from the other that I can still review them as individual works。 I will give a short review of each one of the three books。 And once that is said and done I will leave a final review to the lord of the rings as a whole at the end of the third review。 Now with that out of the way let's get to the review。I've already told the story on how and why I decided to read Tolkien on my review for The Hobbit so I won't rehash it。 Little to say is that my reading of these books has been long in coming。 This is likely the first epic fantasy novel ever released which has defined the whole of the genre to this day。 And so I was a little intimidated I'm not gonna lie。 But here's the thing。 There's a reason it has such a lasting impact。 Tolkien was a genius with few equals, who created a whole new world with languages, creatures and species, and mythology that goes back thousands of years。 The lore in these books is breathtaking。 I think it out does WoT, ASOIAF, and anything Cosmere related by a large margin。 I think the only thing greater and richer and lore is Malazan but not that much because though Malazan has far more lore and history than this it doesn't have one of Tolkien's greatest strengths。 His use of language。 And I mean that in the sense of his writing and his languages。 His prose is among the very best ever and it's so good in fact that he has climbed to challenge George RR Martin in my favorite writer ranking for the number 3 spot。 And that's only with two books。 Tolkien only has the chance to climb with the rest of these books, and perhaps even challenge Stephen King himself in the long run。Now, how about Fellowship itself。 It was a great book。 It really was。 While not my favorite book of all time I think the entire LOTR has the chance to climb high in my rankings。 I don't think it'll ever be number one。 Because I am mostly a reader of newer fantasy and so I don't think I'll ever love these books as much as someone who grew up with them。 But honestly, a lot of what I said for the hobbit continues to apply here。 Tolkien becomes a little more descriptive here but ultimately I see that more as a good thing considering how beautiful his writing is。 He continues to leave you a sense of awe and majesty in reading this that not a lot of writers can accomplish anymore。 (Not saying they don't exist just saying they are few and rare) His characters are good, Frodo is not the most compelling protagonist but that doesn't hurt this book much for me because there are other great characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, and of course Sam。 Sam who is too good for this world。 Sam the perfect symbol of purity。 He's just such a sweetheart you have to love him。 Anyway, The rating for this book is probably 9,7/10。 Truly a great great book。 。。。more

I've read a couple of times before。 I chose to do the audiobook this time, which was OK 。 。 。 especially the songs which the reader actually SANG。 I will probably try to reread again with the actual book soon。 I've read a couple of times before。 I chose to do the audiobook this time, which was OK 。 。 。 especially the songs which the reader actually SANG。 I will probably try to reread again with the actual book soon。 。。。more

So, it's definitely worthy of its title as a classic, but man is it long winded。 So many descriptions and histories。 And songs/poems! Oh my, so many songs。 It's like they'd go on tangents about everything。Sam's character made me a little uncomfortable too。 Too willingly servile。 So, it's definitely worthy of its title as a classic, but man is it long winded。 So many descriptions and histories。 And songs/poems! I can't believe it has taken me this long to finally read this book。 I blame Peter Jackson! The film adaptations are so good that I never felt the need to go back and read the source material。 Big mistake! Plus, there are so many amazing characters that never made it into the movies, like Tom Bombadil and Goldberry。 Are you kidding me。。。Tom Bombadil is the best character in the entire book! I still can't figure out why he is able to put the ring on and nothing happens to him。 Awesome! Plus, those chapters where the hobbits stay with him and Goldberry in the woodland cottage feature some of the most beautiful and descriptive passages in the entire book。 By the time I made it to the Lothlorien chapters I was completely hooked and in love with this story。 Sure, this book is the best fantasy and epic adventure story of all time。 I know, I know。。。 Tolkein invented his own languages and mythology。。。he was a genius, but I still don't think he got enough credit for the beauty of his writing。 Some of his descriptions are on par with Shakespeare in my opinion。 They were like music! I highly recommend listening to this one on audiobook (Phil Dragash version。。。he does the voices perfectly), because this story is meant to be read aloud。 I took turns reading the book and listening to audiobook and I enjoyed every minute。Now I can't wait to read the rest of the series but I am going to stretch it out over the the year to make the fun last as long as possible。 So good! 。。。more

I first read this story early teenage years。 Thought I’d like it more as an adult。。。。I was wrong。 Sorry。 But。 For the first time ever: the movie was better than the book。 HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT TOLKIENS MASTERPIECE!!? Ok。 Go ahead and stone me。 This book practically bored me to death anyway。。。。3 stars because I appreciated how the ordinary & often worthless hobbits were the heros。

LOTR is a compellingly beautiful book。 Tolkien fashions a rich, magical world, and it is inconceivable how all of Middle-Earth originated from a single man's head。 Perhaps more impressive, however, is how Tolkien uses this world to explore the classic, long-standing questions of human nature。 Are there individuals of such goodness that they are incorruptible, even in light of the all-powerful presence of the Ring? Must an individual's journey fundamentally be taken alone, even if one has the generous support of kind-hearted, wise, and loyal friends? Tolkien explores and exemplifies what it means to be good in how he crafts the characters, presenting a wide range from the wholesome and innocent Hobbits to the steadfast yet hardened Aragon。 Most touching, in my view, is the nostalgia of the book-- that all that is beautiful turns to dust。 Yet, as Haldir remarks, "there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater。" As Tolkien wisely explains to his readers, sorrow, albeit tragic, is beautiful in its own right, and perhaps, even intensifies beauty itself。 The Fellowship of the Ring is a wonderful book and I am only sorry that I did not read it sooner。 。。。more

I finally got a chance to read this book having seen the movies a decade ago。 It surely is a wonderful read。I somehow felt that it is very long。 Not sure if it's because I have seen the movie。 And hence the 4 star instead of 5。I like the way the Tolkien has described every tiny details of the whole world he has created。 The story moves along like a river。 Slowly most of the times but like a sudden rapid, it speed up with twists。 A truly great read but you gotta spend time to absorb the greatness I finally got a chance to read this book having seen the movies a decade ago。 It surely is a wonderful read。I somehow felt that it is very long。 Not sure if it's because I have seen the movie。 And hence the 4 star instead of 5。I like the way the Tolkien has described every tiny details of the whole world he has created。 The story moves along like a river。 Slowly most of the times but like a sudden rapid, it speed up with twists。 A truly great read but you gotta spend time to absorb the greatness 。。。more

I loved the movies and I finally got around to reading the books。 I have to say, I was a bit intimidated by them - I have been told many times that they are long and can become boring。 Now that I have read the first at least I can say that while it was a long enough read it seemed to go by quick to me as it was definitely not boring! I tried to read this book back in 2004, when I was 16 years old。 Never got past Tom Bombadil。。。 until this year。 I started reading it not looking for something in particular; just ready to accept anything Tolkien had to offer。 I enjoyed it very, very much。As we say in Peru: Gracias por tanto, profe。 Perdón por tan poco。

I have seen the movies several times and have read the book only this once。 I was surprised, then, at how little seemed to have happened in terms of plot, and even more surprised at how that did little to deter me from turning the pages with excitement。 Perhaps that was because I knew and loved the characters already。 I would say, though, that Tolkien's writing and unparalleled world building were the cause of my enjoyment。 So long a book never passed so quickly。 I look forward to reading the re I have seen the movies several times and have read the book only this once。 I was surprised, then, at how little seemed to have happened in terms of plot, and even more surprised at how that did little to deter me from turning the pages with excitement。 Perhaps that was because I knew and loved the characters already。 I would say, though, that Tolkien's writing and unparalleled world building were the cause of my enjoyment。 So long a book never passed so quickly。 I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy。 。。。more

From a literary perspective this book is wonderful。 Tolkien writes prose very beautifully and if you take the time to sit in it and enjoy it, it will sweep you away to Middle Earth like very few other books can。 It is a wonderful combination of good prose and vivid descriptions and language。 To be honest it is these two elements of Tolkien's writing that make me think of his work like at art piece in a gallery, it has the inherent beauty of being beautiful to the eye。 But the longer you sit and From a literary perspective this book is wonderful。 Tolkien writes prose very beautifully and if you take the time to sit in it and enjoy it, it will sweep you away to Middle Earth like very few other books can。 It is a wonderful combination of good prose and vivid descriptions and language。 To be honest it is these two elements of Tolkien's writing that make me think of his work like at art piece in a gallery, it has the inherent beauty of being beautiful to the eye。 But the longer you sit and dwell on it more meaning will appear。 You can look at it as a whole, at specific pieces, at different angles, and each perspective will give new depth to it。 It is not that other books don't do this as well, it's that The Fellowship provides significantly greater depth at each angle compared to other books, and this is what sets it apart as a great book。 I have read it probably six or seven times now and each time I find new elements to it that I did not see previously。 In terms of pacing it is admittedly a bit slow, and this is a problem for a lot of readers。 It takes a long time to build up momentum。 This can be very discouraging, but it has become such a classic that the slow pacing has become a feature rather than a bug so to speak。 Lots of classics in literature have a slow pace to them indicative of a different time period and different writing styles, but we read them anyways because the story and themes they explore are worth the wait。 The same is true to Tolkien's writing, a slower pace is the result of a different time period for writing。 But it's not just that, I think it is also purposeful。 Tolkien's background in mythology is reflected in how he uses pacing, the slower style and long descriptions evoking epic poems and old legends。 A result of this is an element of gravitas to the story, the slow build up implying significant momentum and that is felt as you progress through the book。 Each event begins to have a sense of weight behind it making each step hold greater significance。 There is a trade off in terms of ease of reading, but I think it is well worth it。 The character development in The Fellowship is not very strong。 There does not appear to be as much of a focus on character development, there is certainly depth that can be found upon closer inspection, but it is not easy to see at first read。 If you are looking for character driven stories this probably isn't the book for you。 Don't get me wrong each character in The Fellowship is very well written。 Tolkien has a way of clearly defining characters, but the way they are written and interact with one another or the way we observe their actions don't fit into modern writing sensibilities, they don't feel like characters that you are "invested in" in the colloquial sense。 Rather we sense that they are the vessels that the story is being carried in, that doesn't make them any less wonderful characters, but it can be a bit jarring to new readers。 In terms of narrative or plot this is sort of a classic adventure, with an inciting incident and shenanigans that follow。 It follows a sort of classic quest story line, in fact it is the epitome of classic quest stories。 。。。more
